The Foundations of AI-Driven Smart Curricula: From Adaptive Architectures to Wisdom-Oriented Educational Design

This paper contributes to the development of an overarching conceptual and methodological approach to AI-driven smart curricula by locating the place of knowledge engineering as their epistemic and operational core and extending the paradigm to the new area of knowledge engineering wisdom engineering. The paper does not conceptualize smart curricula as a set of adaptive algorithms or data-driven personalization tools, but instead as knowledge-intensive, socio-technical systems where domain knowledge, learning theory, and learner variability are formally encoded, constantly updated, and performed reflexively. Based on existing traditions in knowledge representation, knowledge acquisition, ontological modeling, learner modeling, and intelligent tutoring systems, the study presents a three-pillar architecture, consisting of knowledge representation, knowledge acquisition, and adaptive architecture, which facilitates the idea of making curricula context-sensitive, transparent, and responsive to dynamical interaction. Meanwhile, the review is a critical analysis of long-standing issues of scalability, interpretability, and ethics that propose that technical complexity will fail to satisfy the normative needs of education. In the bid to remove these shortcomings, the paper presents a wisdom-based view, which considers judgment, emotion, and ethical reflections as determinants of curricular intelligence. The research suggests a side-step of the optimization-based adaptivity to deliberative, accountable, and developmentally-driven educational systems by embedding value-conscious constraints, reflective governance systems, and the human-centered design principles into the heart of smart curriculum frameworks. The ensuing framework reimagines AI-informed curricula as reflexive learning ecologies, which are structured not only to maximize performance, but also to facilitate agency of learners, equity, and long-term human growth.
