Teacher Professional Development in Online EFL Contexts: The Role of Digital Literacy and Interactive Technologies

Digital literacy has gained increasing significance in contemporary society due to the widespread use of technology and the internet across various domains of life, including educational contexts. With the rapid expansion of online education in schools, universities, and language institutes, the need for effective pre-service and in-service teacher education strategies for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers has become more critical than ever. This study investigates innovative approaches aimed at preparing teachers for online English language instruction and highlights pedagogical practices that foster meaningful teaching and learning experiences for both novice and experienced educators. Adopting a mixed-methods research design, the study reviewed the existing literature and conducted qualitative case studies with 100 experienced Iranian EFL teachers. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, online surveys, and reflective journals, providing rich insights into instructional practices that facilitate language learning in virtual environments. The findings underscore the effectiveness of modern teaching strategies, including interactive technologies, digital collaboration tools, virtual classrooms, and gamified learning platforms. Continuous professional development and peer mentoring emerged as critical components contributing to teachers’ digital competence and confidence. Teacher education programs should incorporate targeted training in digital pedagogical methods, effective online interaction techniques, and formative assessment strategies that enable timely and constructive feedback for learners. The implications of this study offer practical directions for schools, universities, and educational institutions to enhance online EFL teacher education programs by effectively integrating digital pedagogies that promote meaningful engagement and improved learning outcomes.
