The rapid rise of digital technologies has reshaped how brands communicate, persuade, and maintain relationships with consumers. As of 2024, more than two-thirds of the global population actively uses the internet and social media, and Malaysia ranks among the most digitally connected nations, with internet penetration close to full adoption and strong multi-platform engagement particularly among youth. In this environment, influencers have become central intermediaries who shape trends, guide purchasing decisions, and foster participatory forms of communication. A single viral TikTok review can drive national demand for a product, while a YouTube tutorial or Instagram Story can shift brand perceptions within hours. These shifts reflect the growing preference for authentic, peer-like recommendations over traditional advertising. What makes the Malaysian context distinctive is its multicultural and multilingual character, where influencers navigate linguistic fluidity, diverse cultural norms, and religious sensitivities to produce content that feels relevant and trustworthy. Malaysian audiences respond strongly to creators who mirror their lived realities, use relatable language patterns, and demonstrate genuine appreciation of local values and identities. As a result, influencer marketing in Malaysia represents more than a promotional technique. It reflects a broader communication shift toward community-driven engagement in which consumers co-create meaning with influencers and brands. This chapter examines the evolution, dynamics, and strategic considerations of influencer marketing in Malaysia, offering insights into how creators, platforms, and cultural forces shape digital consumer behavior.
